Young Lions Revisited with Chris Brown & Devin Phillips
Saturday, February 21, 2015
221 NW 10th Ave
Portland, Oregon, USA
The Young Lions of the 1980’s landed jazz onto Madison Avenue. Led by Wynton Marsalis and a Time magazine cover story hailing him as spokesman for The New Jazz Age, his young neo-conservative cohorts transformed mainstream jazz into a commercially viable art form. Recalling that era with fresh ears, sights and sounds, a selected coterie of young Portland lions will tangle with 80’s sensation Ralph Bowen and a Young Turk from Los Angeles making his Portland premiere, the breathtaking Kamasi Washington.
“Brown has gained a stellar reputation as one of the bright new talents on the scene, working with a who’s who of Jazz artist.” – Portland Observer
“The melodic euphoria, the gyrating funk progressions, and the warm rumblings of Devin Phillips’ tenor saxophone grab your attention right from the get-go.” – Brass Magazine
